What Is CBD? The Complete Beginner's Guide
What CBD (cannabidiol) is, how it differs from THC, how it's made and how to choose a quality CBD product. A clear guide for beginners.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of more than a hundred compounds called cannabinoids that occur naturally in hemp (Cannabis sativa L.). Unlike the better-known THC, CBD is not psychoactive – it does not cause a “high” and does not impair your ability to function normally.
CBD vs. THC: what's the difference?
Both come from the same plant but behave differently. THC is responsible for the intoxicating effects of marijuana, while CBD is extracted from industrial hemp with very low THC levels. Quality CBD products therefore contain only trace THC below the legal limit, or none at all.
How is CBD made?
The gentlest method is supercritical CO₂ extraction. Pressurised carbon dioxide acts as a solvent that pulls cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant and then evaporates without residue. The extract is diluted in a carrier oil – most often coconut MCT oil or hemp seed oil.
What forms of CBD are there?
- CBD oils and drops – the most flexible form, easy to measure.
- Capsules and gummies – exact dose, no taste, great on the go.
- Skincare – balms, creams and serums.
- Pet products – gentle THC-free oils.
How to spot quality CBD
Transparency is everything. A serious producer publishes a certificate of analysis (COA) from an independent accredited lab for every batch. It shows the real CBD and THC content and confirms the product is free of heavy metals, pesticides and residual solvents.
- EU-grown hemp from certified varieties.
- CO₂ extraction without chemical solvents.
- A public lab certificate for every batch.
- CBD content stated clearly in milligrams, not just percent.
CBD products are not medicines and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before use.
