How to Read a CBD Lab Report (COA)
What do COA, LOD, n.d. and cannabinoid profile mean? Learn to read a CBD lab certificate and judge quality in two minutes.
A certificate of analysis (COA) is the best way to verify that a CBD product contains what it promises. Here's how to read one.
1. Who ran the test
Look for an independent lab accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. The certificate should show the lab name, analysis date and a batch number that matches the one on your pack.
2. Cannabinoid profile
The table lists each cannabinoid – CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBN, Δ9-THC and more – in percent or mg/g. CBD content should match the label within roughly ±10%.
3. LOD, LOQ and n.d.
- LOD (limit of detection) – the lowest amount the lab can detect.
- LOQ (limit of quantification) – the lowest amount it can measure precisely.
- n.d. (not detected) – the compound was not found, it is below the LOD.
4. Contaminants
A complete certificate also covers heavy metals, pesticides, residual solvents and microbiology. Each line should read “pass”.
